Summer break is here! Children are excited to get some time off from early mornings and long school days with hectic schedules! We’ve all had that exciting feeling, and can’t blame them for embracing the chance to relax. Heck, I’m sure we can all agree that a mandatory summer break from our adult careers would be phenomenal. Wishful thinking, right? Nonetheless, I’m happy to see children enjoy their time to kick-back and relax.

Whilst having plenty of time to chill for summer break, my family and I encourage keeping kids educated and active throughout the summer to avoid major setbacks when school beings in the fall. We prefer to continuously prepare Jordan for success. Throughout the years we’ve found 3 educational activities that are fun and entertaining for our family.

Check out our favorite scholarly pastime activities for your kiddos this summer, below!

ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy

Description: ABCmouse.com is a digital website and app for children ages 2-8. The app provides tons of fun, safe, and monitored scholastic activities to that provide great results. ABCmouse.com has productive lessons for every subject that children will experience throughout the early years of their education.

We have been avid users of ABCmouse.com for years. My mother, a retired education professional, is very keen on her grandson’s education. She used ABC mouse in her classroom, so she invested in it for us when Jordan became of age to use it and grasp the content. We enjoy ABCmouse because it has been beneficial for Jordan’s learning capabilities. We have always received great compliments on his speech and his speedy knowledge. As he grew older he became more familiar with the functionalities and began using it more independently. With daily parental and “adulting” tasks, we appreciate Jordan’s access to a form of healthy screen time. If he’s going to use the tablet, I’d rather it be something academic, than half of the nonsense that is placed on the net these days! ABCmouse has vibrant and lively lessons, from the challenging activities, down to the catchy songs.

Jordan’s favorite features:

· phonics and math games

· avatar personalization

· read along stories

Osmo Coding Starter Kit

Description: The Osmo Coding Starter Kit transforms compatible iPads for kids to learn how to code and play Osmo’s video games. Starting from age 5, children are introduced to technical problem solving, critical thinking, and basic interactive programming in a fun and educational way.

With today’s innovative technology evolving at such a fast pace, there are several opportunities for children to get involved with engineering and coding. Coding is something I’ve wanted Jordan to learn for a while. My mother knew of this, and gifted him the Osmo Coding Starter Kit for Christmas for him to begin learning the programming process through play. Jordan loves video games, and it’s pretty neat that he has a way to build and interact with them. The kit’s ability for children to view how video games are made behind the scenes is amazing.

Jordan’s favorite features:

· creating dance music on the games

· playing the game that he created

· creative freedom

KiwiCo

Description: KiwiCo is a delivery service for kids to create a mixture of fun hands-on STEM, STEAM, and Science projects at home. Each box encourages innovation, creativity, engineering, problem-solving, and many more instructional initiatives. There are crates available for children of all ages. They even have them for adults! The subscription also comes with an option to include a relatable book for further exploration into each project.

We discovered KiwiCo in 2020 through an advertisement on Instagram. As the pandemic boredom was settling in, we needed something to keep Jordan educated and busy for the summer to build his developmental confidence. Ever since, Jordan gets super excited to see his personal KiwiCo box appear at our front door. Just as excited as a mom whose 5th Amazon package of the month arrives, that’s likely out of the budget that her and her spouse discussed. The innovative projects have increased Jordan’s creative abilities tremendously. We love these engineering boxes, and I love that everything comes together with thorough instructions. I also like to save the extra unused pieces for potential future creative projects. Thanks KiwiCo for providing everything we need in the crate, and saving us a trip to Michael’s to pick out each and every little piece!

Jordan’s favorite features:

· playing with the projects that he created by hand

· unique projects that were unfamiliar to him

· relatable books that are included (optional)

These activities are fun learning experiences for our son. They’ve been hobbies that he actually looks forward to without realizing that there is a large educational purpose behind it. I have appreciated the evolution of companies that provide fundamental tools for children to learn many things that will benefit them in their bright futures.

Feel free to share activities that you have found to be both educational and fun for your kiddos. We'd love to explore more!

Stay Awesome!
